The Next Big Thing: Interview

Safia Elhillo tagged me in an online project called “The Next Big Thing” where writers with a recent or forthcoming book answer a series of questions, and then tag other writers to do the same. 🙂

WHAT IS THE TITLE OF THE BOOK?
“Strong. Female. Character.”

WHERE DID THE IDEA COME FROM FOR THE BOOK?
The idea/title came to me while I was working as a Production Assistant for a film company and was told when reading scripts I had to find the ideal “Strong Female Character” and well that was freaking difficult. Then I realized over time, I’ve spent my whole life trying to find/become my own. So I went on my own self discover/quest.
Also I had never published a book of poetry before, not even a chap book so I felt like I needed to get this done!

WHAT GENRE DOES YOUR BOOK FALL UNDER?
Strange Unicorn-awesomness. And I guess for the scholars who care: “Poetry”

WHAT ACTORS WOULD YOU CHOOSE TO PLAY THE CHARACTERS OF THE BOOK IN A MOVIE RENDITION?
(I love this question!) Being a massive movie nerd I’ve always approach writing a poem as though I am scripting a short film.
I would get Kerry Washington to play Lady Macbeth because I love her and she’s a sexy badass.
The poem that I wrote to frank ocean, I hope its played by me and well frank ocean… (Can we make this happen?!)
Michael Fassbender’s role in Steve McQueen’s movie “Hunger” inspired my poem “Bobby Sands.” So that is already casted perfectly.
And well I’ve always hoped and dreamed that Morgan Freeman or Christopher Walken would just read one of my poems.
Then if we can get Tina Fey or J Cole involved somehow…

WHAT IS THE ONE-SENTENCE SYNOPSIS OF YOUR BOOK?
(This is hard! But ok.)
A poetic tale about a girl raised by strong men who realizes strong men are raised by stronger women.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO WRITE THE FIRST DRAFT OF YOUR MANUSCRIPT?
I feel like I’ve been writing this book since I first became a writer. I mean, I’ve always wanted to get published, so for awhile. But over all, about a year.

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THIS BOOK?
My mother. She is the reason why I am a poet, her being amazing writer herself. She is truly the smartest and strongest person I know and she’s always help me make any and all my dreams realist. The ideal support system every aspiring writer needs.
And also my father. He raised me to be opinionated, out spoken, and bold. Being Irish, he has is my history book. Taught me about the art of being a good storyteller. And of course how to be charming…

IS YOUR BOOK SELF-PUBLISHED OR REPRESENTED BY AN AGENCY?
Well, my book was first self-published. I just put it on the shelves of bookstores. But finally, by fate the wonderful, BRILLIANT, and supportive people at Litsam Publishing took on my awful spelling and chicken scratched and scattered thoughts, polished it up and produced the shiny elegant book that it is today.

#TheGoodFeelingsTour: Video Diaries

Sorry for the lack of posts, or the lacking posts. Mary and I are entering our second half of our tour which is a massive milestone that is coming with homesickness and becoming physically sick too. Luckily though we have cold meds, water, vitamins, and music to get us through it.

But also we have been able to record our journey, follow along!

Hey Toronto!

So Mary and I had a blast visiting you guys but we are worried that your money is fake. It’s plastic and you can see through it. Strange! But it’s kind of cool but we are worried.

Jokes aside, this is our last night in Toronto. But don’t you worry because it’s not our last time in Canada. We still have two more shows in Ottawa and Montreal but those are after our week long DC adventure which I am looking forward too.

Toronto has been great beside the snow storm that hit us late last night. And of course the fake money!

NYC > Toronto

Mary and I left New York this morning and are currently about to pass out in Toronto Canada. It’s exciting to be able to call this an international tour. Makes it seem so more professional.

We are sharing an air mattress and typing away at our computers. Since we are both so tired from the 9 hour drive we are of course not talking to each other but typing away at our computers. We are both so out of it that forming real sentences is too much of a struggle.

Yes, being on tour really is that glamours.

If you want to be keep updated follow me on twitter or check my other blog (The intern_archives) for funny short video diaries.

Now I am going to do what I do best: sleep.

Boston – Cafe 939

Hello World!

Here is my first post on my official website. (I have a website! This is so cool!) So here’s the run down, last night Mary Lambert and I had our first show on tour (The Good Feelings Tour) with the Berklee College of Music at Cafe 939. It was utterly amazing! There are no words to describe how welcoming, kind, and wonderful the people have been so far. Mary and I were re-caping about it last night and we both agreed we have made new friends and gained a Boston family.

Right now, we are hanging out in the city, seeing old friend, drinking tea, trying not to get sick, and getting ready for our next show which is in Worcester. I’ve been filming and taking many many photos. (Most of them are on my Instagram) Sorry for the short note, but will make sure to update more as the days unroll!
